Cargolux lifts Solar Impulse

In a one-of-its-kind operation, Cargolux Airlines operated a Boeing 747 freighter out of the Swiss military airfield of Payerne, carrying the solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse to the United States. Solar Impulse will be deployed for its ‘Across America’ mission on a coast-to-coast flight from San Francisco to Washington D.C. and New York City, including 3-4 stopovers on the way. With Payerne airfield’s short runway and lack of parking area for large freighter aircraft, operating a Boeing 747 freighter was a particular challenge.   Cargolux mastered the operation safely, carrying a limited amount of fuel to reduce landing and take-off weight, and having to park the aircraft on the runway during the loading process.
