Approximately 35 years ago, the Soviet Union collapsed or at least disintegrated. For an interesting account of the process, the reader might want to have a look at Zubok (2021). A commonly received interpretation is that the West had won against the East or at least against the Soviet Union and the Communist World. More exactly, so-called liberal democracies had won and this led to such a hype that Fukuyama (2006; first published in 1992) announced “The End of History” and simply stated that most countries’ political systems would converge towards liberal democracies.
