When contracting online, it is inevitably necessary for the contracting parties to be able to identify themselves as well as each other. While Directive 1999/93/EC on a Community framework for electronic signatures («the eSignatures Directive») provides for the use and recognition of electronic signatures, it has long been considered incomplete, lacking a uniform application across the EU broader and falling short of boosting the use of online services.
