Published in the Official Journal of 4 May 2016, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) entered into force on 24 May 2016, and will be applicable across the European Union from 25 May 2018 onward. The GDPR is the result of a lengthy revision of the European directive 95 / 46 / CE from 1995. The objective behind this new text is to provide a unified data protection framework applying directly to all EU member states as well as to all EU citizens to guarantee a high level of protection for citizens while playing the role of enabler of the digital single market.
