Ambassador Vladimir Norov, head of mission to the European Union, ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands and former foreign minister of Uzbekistan, held recently a briefing on the presidential election on December 4, following the passing away of President Islam Karimov on September 2. Interim President Shavkat Mirziyoyev won the elections with 88.6% of the vote among four candidates. The Uzbek people have voted for continuity since the new president has been prime minister since 2003 and belongs to the political party of the late president Islam Karimov. This choice (88.6%) can be explained by the outstanding economic and social performance achieved by President Karimov during his 25 years of tenure:...
